Firefox is a program for browsing the Web. It is like Internet
Explorer
or Netscape, but it is more secure and allows for features not
available in other programs. It was introduced in Fall, 2004 and millions
of people have been using it since. You are encouraged to
download it and install it yourself. This page gives you step-by-step
instructions on how you can go about doing doing so if you are using a
Windows operating system.
[Requisite disclaimer: This page is offered as is. There is absolutely
no reason that following these instructions should cause any problems for
you, but I can make no guarantees and I cannot and will not be held
responsible for any problems resulting from its use.]
You may want to start by printing out these instructions so you can
follow along as you download and install the program.
To print the page, choose the File menu and Print. (Your machine has to
be connected to a working printer for this to work.)
Start by clicking
here to download the program.
When you click on that link you will arrive at a Web page that looks like
this:
You will want to click on the "Free Download" link highlighted by pink
in the image above.
(You will see Firefox 1.0.6 not Firefox 1.0.4 as
indicated on the images here. That is fine, go ahead
and download
Firefox 1.0.6 and proceed with the instructions below.)
Once you click on that link, the following window will come up asking you what to do with the program.
Click on Save. The following screen will come up:
Next, you will have to choose a location on your machine where the program can be saved. This is up to you. In order to be able to locate the file easily, you may want to save it on the Desktop. First, click where the red arrow is pointing here:
Next, find the Desktop on the list and choose it (move your cursor so
"Desktop" is highlighted and let go).
Click Save.
3. Next, you need to look for the Firefox Setup icon on your Desktop (or wherever else you may have saved it). It looks like this:
(Please note that the background will look different on your machine depending on the desktop image you have set up.)
If you don't know how to get to the Desktop follow these
instructions: To
get to the Desktop, minimize all the open windows. You can do this
by clicking on the leftmost square among the three squares on the upper
right hand corner of each window:
Once you have found the Firefox Setup icon, double click on it (click on it twice).
Click on this icon twice.
First, the installation program will start extracting and you will see this window:
Wait until it goes to 100%. At that point this window will come up:
As the window suggests, it is best if you exit from all running programs.
(This is why it may be a good idea to print out these instructions.)
Click on Next.
Now you will be asked to read the Software License Agreement:
If you agree with it then click on the button next to "I Accept the terms of this license agreement" and then click on Next. You will see this:
The button next to Standard installation is checked off you. You should
leave it as is unless you are an experienced user and would like to use Custom installation. (However, in that case it is doubtful that you would be reading these installation instructions so you should just proceed with the Standard option.)
Click Next. You will see this:
The setup program is ready to begin installation of Firefox. Click on Next. You will see the following:
When the installation is complete, the following window will come up:
You can leave the two buttons checked and click on Finish.
Firefox will now launch. (Or if you did not have checked off "Launch Firefox Now" then start up Firefox the way you start other programs. Either click on Start in the bottom left hand corner of your screen and choose the program (orange/blue circular icon) or double click on the Firefox icon on your desktop or press the Firefox icon in the Taskbar.)
This is what it should look like (approximately):
CONGRATULATIONS! Your new browser is now
working.
Next, we will import your
bookmarks/favorites from your other browser program.
